The impact of quality of early childhood education care programs

 on child development

 The preschool period is critical in determining children’s developmental trajectories. Many preschool-aged children attend Early Childhood Education programs such as child care centres and preschool programs. While the quality of these programs has been linked to social, emotional and cognitive outcomes for children, recent studies have yielded inconsistent results about the extent of these associations.  In this talk I will present a series of comprehensive meta-analyses and systematic-reviews conducted on the literature linking four quality measures with child outcomes defined very broadly.  Specifically, associations between child/staff ratios, staff education and two observational measures of staff/child interactions and child outcomes in the literature were explored.  Our findings reveal few and generally weak associations between these child care quality indicators and children’s outcomes. However, the literature in this area is fraught with methodological problems making it hard to draw strong conclusions. I will also discuss the need to re-think our conceptualization of quality and provide preliminary validation data for a new measure of caregiver cognitive sensitivity towards children that we have been developing. ​
