Which factors promote the retention of a heritage language in immigrants second generation? Is there a match between one’s perceived mastery of heritage language and the actual ability to use it? These are the questions posed in the current study of bilingual children born in Israel to Russian-speaking parents – immigrants from the former USSR.

Thirty-nine children and their parents participated in the study. Twenty of the children attended a social club whose activity included the perpetuation of the Russian language and cultural heritage, while the rest were exposed to it only at home. The participants filled in questionnaires probing their perceived mastery of Russian and Hebrew as well as the use of both languages in different social situations.

Additionally, children were given an oral and written Russian language quiz. All children rated their mastery of Hebrew as higher than that of Russian.

The results of the study indicate that children who attended the “Russian” club were actually more proficient in Russian, though their self-perception regarding mastery of this language was not different from that of other children. Parents of those children who showed better results in the Russian language quiz tended to use more Russian in different social situations both in and outside their homes.

Their children, however, reported the use of Russian on the same level as children with lower Russian quiz results. It can be concluded that formal support of a heritage language in the context of a club or a study group is more effective for the retention of language than mere use at home. An interesting disparity was found between children’s perceived and actual mastery of their heritage language.
