Cognitive Reserve is that intellectual buffering against age-related cognitive decline that is posited to result from such life-long practices as education, bilingualism (and multilingualism), and arguably, development of many types of expertise (per Valian, 2015). Brain Reserve is, presumably, its concrete counterpart, providing the substrate for compensatory processes that can permit older adults to manifest little or no cognitive decline. Brain Reserve appears to be linked to health, which, in turn, is linked both to socio-economic status (SES) and to performance on the language behaviors that tend to decline with advancing age: lexical retrieval and sentence-processing in non-ideal conditions. In this talk I review the influences of education, SES, and health on language performance in older adults with and without aphasia, and discuss the findings with respect to the notions of cognitive and brain reserve.
