There is a basic tension in experimental psychology between our attempts to build a model of the modal brain on the one hand, and our consciousness and interest in individual differences on the other hand.

By examining the effects of language experience on the functional organization of language in the brain, we can map the constraints on individual variability: There are universal patterns in all human brains and there are patterns that result from the specific cognitive demands of different languages.

I present studies using English, Hebrew and Arabic, to delimit the effects of principled differences in orthography and language structure on patterns of hemispheric involvement in the early stages of reading
